‘Dirty Little Fuckbird’: Performance Highlights

arlene caffrey live art performance at breaking the patterns exhibition sevilla

Here are some highlights from my 15-minute performance at the opening of ‘Breaking The Patterns Vol. 02’ group exhibition running 11th July – 11th August 2024 at GalerĂa del Antiqvarium, Sevilla.

This performance seeks to create a sense of wonder at what a body can do and to explore the collective consciousness of signifiers surrounding female sexual expression, decency and lust.

Using the gaze, this performance is about explicit sexual self-expression, lust and yearning. I read aloud excerpts from the private letters of James Joyce to his wife Norah Barnacle, whilst performing deconstructed erotic dancing informed by my practice as a professional pole dancer.

As well as this, I distributed nude portraits (of myself) to audience members. These images were created as part of my time on residency in Sevilla, but were prohibited from being displayed in the gallery by request of management, which has a ban on female nudity specifically.

This piece was performed as part of a larger body of work created during my time on residency in Seville, bringing together sculpture, photography and live art, in the theme of everyday misogyny that I experienced whilst living in Sevilla.
