I can share with you at last the full video, and some photos from my new act ‘The Death of Cú Chulainn’ that I created and performed for The Slut Garden in Amsterdam back in June.
The concept for this act is informed by Oliver Sheppard’s sculpture of ‘The Death of Cú Chulainn’ at the GPO in Dublin. The Morrigan – an Irish triple goddess associated with birth, death and rebirth – is depicted as a crow landing on the shoulder of a hero in his dying moment in battle. I wanted to not only activate this sculpture, but to reframe this often misunderstood goddess and depict her secret softness and light as well as her ferocity. She is the strength of what is needed in the moment.
In this act, Cú Chulainn is brilliantly represented by Aaron, an incredibly tall theoretical (theatrical) physicist, with Irish roots.
Cú Chulainn is depicted with a sword in the original statue. To be less literal in my re-imagining of this scene, I chose a hurl to symbolize his strength, spirit and ingenuity. Also let’s be honest, the hurl pretty much is a weapon! There were also practical reasons in this decision as I didn’t want to be carrying a fake sword in my luggage.
Again I would like to extend a hundred thousand thank you’s to the organisers of The Slut Garden show for inviting me to be a part of a unique and beautifully produced event: Nicole Spirit, Maria and Estefania Jiménez. 🖤
If you enjoy my performance below, please consider tipping me by buying me a coffee. Thank you in advance for your generosity, you gorgeous being.
